Designing a deck for a Wellington section
Wind, sun and slope decide most of the design. We look at where the shelter is, how the deck connects to the house and the garden, how high it sits above the ground and what that means for balustrades and steps. On a sloping section the structure below the deck matters as much as the boards on top, and it is where we spend the time.
Materials are chosen for the site: treated timber framing, decking in the timber or composite you prefer, stainless fixings near the coast, and balustrades in glass where the view is the point.
Consent for decks
In New Zealand a deck is generally exempt from building consent when it is low to the ground, but higher decks, and any deck with a balustrade requirement, usually need a consent from your council. The threshold is set in the Building Act's exemptions and it is worth checking before you start. We will tell you where your deck sits and handle the consent where one is needed.
Built to last in Wellington weather
Salt air, wind and rain wear outdoor timber faster here than almost anywhere in the country. We use treated framing, fixings suited to the exposure, proper falls so water runs off, and gaps that let the deck dry. A deck oiled or stained in its first season and washed once a year will look right for years; we will tell you what your chosen timber needs.
What decides the cost
Size, height and materials. A low deck on flat ground is the simplest; a raised deck with steps, a balustrade and structural posts on a slope is a bigger job. Composite decking costs more than timber up front and less to maintain. We will give you a clear scope so you can see where the money goes.

Straight answers before you commit to anything.
Do I need a consent to build a deck?
Low decks close to the ground are usually exempt; higher decks, decks needing a balustrade, and decks attached to the house in certain ways usually need a building consent. The rules are specific, so ask us or your council before you start. We handle the consent where one is required.
Timber or composite decking?
Timber is the traditional Wellington choice and costs less up front; composite costs more but needs little maintenance. Either works on a well-built frame. We will talk through what suits your site and how you use it.
Can you build on a steep section?
Yes. Raised decks, steps, landings and walkways on sloping sections are a large part of our outdoor work.
Do you build fences and retaining walls?
Yes. Timber fencing, screening and boundary work are often done alongside a deck project.
