What a bathroom renovation involves
A bathroom is the most trade-dense room in the house. Behind a new bathroom there is usually demolition, framing changes, plumbing and drainage, waterproofing, tiling, electrical work, ventilation, joinery and painting, and every one of them has to happen in the right order. Our job is to run that sequence and make sure the finish is what you saw in the plan.
- Full renovations: strip out, new layout, new fixtures and finishes.
- Partial renovations: a new shower, vanity and tiling while keeping the existing layout.
- Wet-area waterproofing and tiled showers.
- Adding a second bathroom or an ensuite as part of a renovation or extension.

Layout, fixtures and finish
The first decision is whether the layout stays. Keeping the toilet, shower and basin where they are keeps the plumbing simple and the cost down. Moving them opens up better layouts but adds drainage work and usually a building consent. We will show you both options honestly.
From there it is fixtures and finishes: tiled or acrylic shower, wall-hung or floor-mounted vanity, tile size and layout, heated towel rail, underfloor heating, lighting and mirrors. Waterproofing and consent
In New Zealand, building work involving a tiled shower or a wet-area membrane generally needs a building consent, and so does moving plumbing or drainage. A like-for-like replacement of fixtures in the same positions often does not. We will tell you what your project needs and deal with the council paperwork where a consent is required, because the waterproofing detail is the part of a bathroom that has to be right the first time.
Timing and living with the work
A bathroom renovation puts the room out of action for the duration, so we plan the sequence tightly and tell you at the start how long you will be without it. If it is the only bathroom in the house, we talk through the options before we begin. The site is left clean and safe at the end of every day.

Do I need a consent to renovate my bathroom?
If the layout stays the same and fixtures are replaced like for like, usually not. If plumbing or drainage moves, or a tiled shower and wet-area membrane are installed, a building consent is usually required. We will confirm this for your project before work starts.
How long does a bathroom renovation take?
A partial renovation can be a matter of days; a full strip-out with a new layout is usually a few weeks on site once materials are on hand. Tiles, vanities and showers can have lead times, so we order early.
Can you renovate an ensuite or add a second bathroom?
Yes. Adding a bathroom is often part of a renovation or extension, and we handle the building work, the trades and the consent.
