The building work behind a new kitchen
A kitchen renovation is rarely just cabinets. Opening the kitchen to the living area, moving a doorway, relocating the sink, adding a window or changing the floor all come before the joinery arrives. We handle that building work and coordinate the trades so the kitchen installer walks into a room that is ready.
- Removing or moving walls to open up the space, including structural work where a wall carries load.
- New flooring, wall linings, ceilings and lighting layouts.
- Plumbing and electrical routes for a new layout, arranged with licensed trades.
- Installation of the kitchen and finishing: splashbacks, trims, painting.

Layout first
The layout decides how the kitchen works for the next twenty years. We look at how you cook, where the light comes from, where the fridge and pantry sit and how the room connects to dining and outdoor space, then work out what building changes each option needs. Keeping the sink and appliances close to their current positions keeps the cost down; moving them is often worth it when a wall comes out.
Finishes that last
The kitchen in our gallery shows the finishes we like: white cabinetry, pale timber flooring and a tiled splashback that is easy to live with. We will tell you where a cheaper choice will show and where it will not.
Kitchens in older Wellington homes
Villas, bungalows and post-war houses often have kitchens tucked into a small rear room with a scullery or laundry next door. Combining those rooms is one of the most common jobs we do, and it is where checking the framing, floor levels and services first pays off. Older floors are rarely level, exterior walls may hide moisture, and wiring may not be up to a modern kitchen's load. We find that out before the joinery is ordered, not after.
Consent and timing
Replacing a kitchen in the same place usually needs no consent. Removing a load-bearing wall, moving drainage or altering the exterior usually does. We will confirm which applies. A straightforward replacement can be done in a couple of weeks once the joinery arrives; a layout change with structural work takes longer, and joinery lead times are often the longest part of the programme, so we order early and plan around them.

Straight answers before you commit to anything.
Do I need a building consent for a kitchen renovation?
Usually not for a like-for-like replacement. Removing a load-bearing wall, moving drainage or changing the exterior usually does need one. We will check your plan and tell you.
Can you remove the wall between the kitchen and living room?
Often, yes. If the wall is structural we design in a beam and get the engineering and consent sorted. We will tell you what is involved before you commit.
Do you supply the kitchen cabinetry?
We do the building work, coordinate the trades and install, and we can work with the kitchen company or joiner of your choice. Ask us if you would like a recommendation.
How long will I be without a kitchen?
For a replacement in the same layout, usually a couple of weeks once the joinery is on site. For a layout change with structural work, longer. We plan the sequence with you and set up a temporary arrangement where we can.
